    BMW 330D 2000 (E46) - Clunky differential Archived Message

    Hi All

Had a potential customer call to ask for a quote to change the rear differential on the above vehicle. He said that it clunks when changing gear and the BMW dealer he visited wants to replace the rear diff'.

Now, just wanted to run this past the BMW experts out there......is this a common issue? I notice on the web that the E46 M3 variant suffers from the usual noise associated with LSDs when turning, etc, but this is a clunk and this model won't have an LSD (will it)?

We will obviously have to see the car to confirm the diagnosis, but if it is the rear diff, are there any other places we can get one other than BMW, i.e. reconditioned, exchange units, etc?

Also, an idea on time to change would be useful as I can't quite work it out from Autodata how long this would take, 6 hours?

    Many thanks

    Sean
