    FIXED thanks for reply steve,
managed to do more investigation yesterday into problem and checked output from o/s/f wheel sensor because like you say i thought 3 wires would mean hall effect sensor however it turns out that they are normal ac generator sensors and the third wire appears to be ground[verified by scope trace],so i removed ecu plug and checked continuity of sensor through wiring, everything good [around 1000 ohms].I was doing job for another garage who had already fitted a new n/s/f sensor to no avail.I checked ring on wheel bearing and that was fine so i checked with their supplier who assured me that the wheel sensor was the correct one,[i verified with bmw that sensor was not handed]so couldnt understand why i still had no output.took sensor out again and found out there is a square block on the end of it with 2 magnetic sides and 2 sides hardly magnetic [the hardly magnetic side faced reluctor] moved sensor 90 degrees round out of line with bolt hole and got ac wave form.Turns out wrong sensor supplied even after about six phone calls with supplier to verify this wasnt the case.SORRY FOR LONG POST but this fault took up most of yesterday to get sorted and may save someone same hassle in future.
