BMW M3 2004 - Alternator not charging # Archived Message

This vehicles alternator isn't charging .We have assumed this is a "smart charge system " i think we may be wrong .
At the alternator we have battery voltage at main output cable ,we have load tested this to alternator body and this checks out ok,
two pin connector battery voltage after ignition on ok other terminal about .5 volts (warning lamp )?,key on engine running this becomes battery voltage and warning lamp goes off.
So far so good ,only voltage doesn't rise above 12.1 volts no load ,under load this drops below 12 volts .The "re-conditioned " has been tested
    hum !
If this is a smart charge alternator what should we expect to see at the multi plug terminals ?
    Thanks in anticipation Nigel .
