Hi Stewart
ive had something similar on megane scenics, under the floor directly under the drivers seat there are joins in the petrol pipes which have crimped metal connections these can split thru corrosion and if you fiddle with the connectors you will get a spray of petrol (careful now ) it might not be this but its worth a look as iv had a few petrol smells caused by this with no obvious sign of leaks
