I would test as much as possible before pulling head off, and even do tests as it is coming apart. I had a primera diesel loosing coolant but only when hot, I did all usual test and nothing was found but when I pressurised cylinder one with the piston at the bottom it blew up thru radiator. When the head was off you would not have seen the fault with number one at tdc or even half way down, even with the piston at the bottom and using a mirror it only looked like a slight stain on the cylinder wall and would have been dismissed without knowing and proving the fault was on that cylinder. Without thorough testing the head would have been off and back on with the fault still present and I would have ended up standing the costs and possibly would not have got the job of fitting new engine that was required. I know this is not a regular occurrence but half the jobs now appear to be problem jobs rather than being straight forward. Graham
