Ford Focus 1.4 Duratec 2002 - Backfire through inlet manifold Archived Message

This car arrived as a non-start. Would crank then backfire extremely strongly - you'd think the intake manifold would be in pieces.

I renewed the crank position sensor as a matter of course - most likely culprit and a common, easy and inexpensive job. No better.

    Misfire DTC stored.

Found spark plugs, leads and surrounding area absolutely red-rusty. Removed and renewed seized plugs, renewed leads and coil pack.

Engine now runs, idles briefly @ 3,000 RPM, then settles to a rough/surging idle, backfiring very loudly and regularly through inlet manifold.

Throttle pedal has no effect on engine speed.

I have checked cam timing carefully - correct.

I'm not too keen on scoping waveforms at the moment for fear of doing damage by running the engine for more than a few seconds.

Would the cam sensor cause such a problem (disconnecting makes no difference).

    TIA.

    Regards,

    Joe
