Just a warning to you all after having a near disaster with the above !

Had vehicle in for service ten days ago, these later Vectra's use a paper oil filter element housed in an aluminium housing with an aluminuim cap that is supposed to be torqued to 15 NM, I reckon this one was done up to about 100 NM as I had to loosen it off with a torque wrench on the cap hex. , (first time I had seen the motor I hasten to add !,customer was reccomended by one of my regulars).

During the undoing process the main housing started to turn so I had to hold the main part of the body with a filter strap otherwise the cap would butt up against the ex. manifold and never come off. The main housing probably moved about 4-6 mm, but, unbeknown to me , this small movement had cracked the housing at the top where you cannot see because of the ex. heatshield, the net effect of this was that although no leak was evident after the service, where the housing had cracked had over a period of a few days allowed the O ring to spit out of its groove and directed a jet of atomised oil straight onto the back of the ex. manifold where it duly ignited causing an engine fire !!

The first my customer knew was when he was furiously flashed at and stopped by another motorist following him who had seen the flames !
Luckily for me the fire damage was superficial and a new oil filter housing that strangely my dealer had on the shelf? cured the problem.

So the moral is ,if the filter housing moves at all during filter change, take the exhaust heatshield off AND the filter housing, and closely inspect for cracks/damage. The housing has a flat on the top that locates against a cast lip on the block that should stop the main housing moving, on this car that flat had already been broken hence the movement in the first place, the housings are about £26 from Vauxhall so if you do a lot of these you ought to stock one just in case, I do now, and the happy ending?, after I had told the customer what had happened and picked up all the costs and told him he would not have to pay anything, he told me "You have a customer for life for being upfront and honest", he knows nowt about cars and was expecting a large bill !

Hopefully, this message will stop other members avoid what could be a costly experience !!
