    Dont want to alarm you but..

    If it is the plastic thermostst housing the brass thread insets can "Pull through" when refitting the bolts. unless you can afford to have the car off the road while waiting for a replacement it might be worth replacing the entire assembly preemptivly as it were (there not too expensive). also the steel pipes are prone to corrosion. Check carefully before refitting.

    There is a second steel pipe that runs below the radiator. these tend to rust through also. Check this also and replace if dodgy looking.

    Risk of leakage and consiquent overheating are not an option on the K series engine. Overheating "will" result in head gasket failure.
