Bit the bullet, bought a new unit, got the vehicle lifted and taken to the dealers who programmed it.
A large part of the problem was that the key is in the passenger door and with the driver's door deadlocked I could not get the interior trim out of the way to remove the steering lock. It was lucky that the steering was nearly straight or it would have been a hell of a job to get it on the recovery truck.
