You really need the special tooling to push it back into the steering knuckle because what happens is the locking ring will push off (as we found out).
You need to put something between the drive flange and the locking ring so it cna't be forced off once pushing it into the knuckle.
We used an old ABS reluctor ring cut in half then tapered down to fit in between the 2 parts as mentioned, not ideal but worked.
Look on Youtube and i'm sure you'll see what i mean.

I think your meant to change the wheel/hub bearing in situ.
