No experience on galaxy, but have seen (and had same problem) 13 pin socket with a internal mechanical micro switch which is operated by attaching plug.
Not the best environment so suspect yours has the same. We ended up fitting a manual remote flick switch in the boot as seemed pointless replacing socket for same to happen a few month later
Not got a converter plug permanently fitted?
I understand that some systems dont use micro switch but use a electronic circuit detection system.
