What make of belt ?

At a recent Gates tech evening they suggested that a clean brake of belt is typically the result of crimping during fitting. (i.e forcing the belt to bend through a small radius possibly to feed the belt through a small gap)

May be worth a look at AD timing belt section in tech topics.
