I would approach it as follows:
1) Have a look at the exhaust emissions. This may take you down the correct diagnostic route, ie, ignition, engine or fuelling fault.
2) Might be worth taking a fuel sample and see what if anything separates out.
3) Compression and smoke test won't do any harm.
4) Harness wriggle test to see if you can create a misfire.
When it "cuts out", is that a stalling or ignition cutting out? Is the rev counter flickering whilst misfiring? Does it start up straight away after cutting out?
