Your friend is spot on, breather should only work when vac is high and shut off positive pressure when s/charger is working, when it fails pressurized air with oil mist feeds into intake downstream of air filter but upstream from amm.

Normally a good clean with brake or carb cleaner will sort out the amm, check the breather pipes as well they go soft and gooey over time.
