Year of Manufacture *: 2003
( Optional ) Engine Code or CC: ENG CODE BGU
we have a 2003 audi A3, with the customer complaining of no power assistance (steering assist)
code read vehicle - two faults in the can gateway - no communication with steering assist module and fault code "01044 Control Module Incorrectly Coded".
obviously no comms' with the PAS module, so no visible fault codes there.
We checked the power and grounds to the PAS module and checked if there was voltage on the can wires. We thought "dead module" but decided to go for a long test drive and sure enought the PAS came back alive. So back into the workshop and re-checked for fault codes, now have only the 01044 fault. I asked the customer how the fault manifested itself and he told me his problems stemmed from just after a huge down pour the Island experienced a few days ago. He had to actually clean his scuttle panel drains out as they were blocked with leaves etc !!!!
so now thinking maybe instead of dead module with have a water ingress problem, but not sure where the gateway is situated on this vehicle.
We have also discovered that the part number has changed for the steering rack (module is part of rack) and is basically an upgraded PAS system which comes to a total of near £1k for the parts. Begs the question why have they needed to re-design the system requiring new parts, looms etc.
any ideas would be welcome as this vehicle now has intermittant power steering assist (module is obviously becoming "invisable" to gateway), one minute it works, next its down to muscle power.
ps the freeze frame on the fault 01044 has a date of 2007, do i presume someone has been messing with this vehicle back then and messed up the gateway coding, customer tells me it is not the original radio that came with the car, but he did not own the car back in 2007 !!
