There was a problem with dry joints on the circuit board in the fob on vauxhalls of around this time. Not impossible to have 2 with same fault.
Squeezing the fob to press the button can give contact, but when pressure released loses battery contact,this is why you think the fob is OK even if faulty.
Split the fob and have a look.
