Your vehicle may have lost this means of slip so more load is being tranfered to the rear pinion.
The nut may of come loose because the bearings failed and worn the bearing tracks down as a consequence of that the pre load on the pinion is lost and the nut could of worked loose.
Freelanders suffer with the viscous coupling in the middle of the prop seizing , a consequence of that is damage to the transfer box (normally shears teeth or wrecks bearings.
