On 7th. July 1940, Penhale Army Camp, Cornwall, was bombed by a lone German
plane. Twenty-two men, newly returned from the horrors of Calais and Dunkirk
were killed, 19 being subsequently interred in a local Cornish graveyard. My
father survived this raid. Most of the victims belonged to the 58th. Light
Anti-Aircraft Regiment which was originally headquartered in Clydebank, but
had men from all parts of the U.K. within its ranks.
Every year since, the local Perranporth community has commemorated this
event, but this year, being the 70th. Anniversary, will be the last, and a
very special Remembrance service will be staged 17-18 July (full details at
bottom of page).
I have undertaken to try to contact relatives of all of the victims of the
1940 bombing, with some success. However, I have been unable to find all of
them, and wondered if you could provide help in finding some of those I have
been unable to locate?
Many thanks for any assistance you are able to provide.
Should you need further information, photographs of the regiment and
individuals, personal memories of the bombing, etc., I can supply these.
Yours faithfully,
Stuart Gray.
