I'm also about two-thirds of the first volume, which I should finish before the weekend. I have volume two already, so we can go right through it while the rest arrive. I agree with you on the complexity of names and relationships. Fortunately, my edition includes, at the back, a list of characters and two genealogical charts, extremely useful. I keep coming back to them to clear things up.
I'm about two-thirds of the way through the first volume. Originally, I thought that your idea of alternating volumes was a fine idea. But after beginning to read The Story of the Stone, I feel like I'm trying to drink from a firehose to keep up with the vast number of exotically named characters and their complicated relationships. I fear that if I don't forge on through all 2500 pages consecutively, I'll be hopelessly lost when I attempt to pick it up again. I may change my mind and waver eventually, but this novel makes Genji seem simple and straightforward. (Actually, Genji seems much more subtle, but the complexity of this is quite overwhelming.)
Nevertheless, I'm enjoying it immensely. :^)
Yes, I am indeed reading the David Hawkes translation. How far are you?
