Because Patri is the only person the ghosts ever speak to, because they invite her to the 'party', because they cause her death, I feel that she is the reason they are there. Given that, I feel that the fact that they are all men and naked means they have something to do with her sexuality. This is re-enforced by her mom's talk about 'real men'. I don't know what she means by a real man. Maybe if we knew that, the book would seem like allegory.
Why are the workers so used to living with ghosts or unreal men? It doesn't seem to be anything about living with the past. Is it just about poor people living more with the possibility of death? That might connect to the socio economic stuff at the beginning.
