I am curious about the aircraft beacon that shows on some old topo maps from around 1940-1951. The beacon appears to be at the height of land near present day Ingraham St and Beacon Place in Beacon Heights. One would assume that the name of the subdivision is related to the old aircraft beacon.
It also appears that the beacon may have been located on or near the Cherry Hill Cemetery, which is very significant in terms of being one of the oldest African American burial grounds still surviving in this part of PG County. Unfortunately the cemetery is not in great shape but the site has been preserved.
I've not seen anything connecting the beacon and the cemetery but the proximity of the two is intriguing.
