The only thing consistent abut historic name spelling is that it is inconsistent. The names of members of the Kirby/Kerby family of the Oxon Hill/Fort Foote area are spelled both ways in the census records. On the 1861, 1878, and 1894 maps of the area, the names are consistently spelled KIRBY. There are lots more historical records that one could check, but based on years of research, I feel sure that the name was spelled both ways.

: There seems to be a controversy brewing over
: the correct spelling of Kerby Hill. I
: always thought the name came from the Kerby
: Family, who had a farm along what is now
: Indian Head Highway, particularly on the
: west side. I cant find the Kerby family
: history so as to confirm the name. Some
: claim it is spelled Kirby. Not me. Any
: help would be appreciated.
