Clement R. Connick was one of the sons of William Connick, a German immigrant who settled in Prince George's County late in the 18th century, and who died in 1849. Clement was already set up on his own property at the time of William's death. In 1853, Clement acquired through agreement with his siblings another property, and within a few years built on it a very handsome brick dwelling with particularly fine dentilled brick cornice, and named the new homestead "Connick's Folly." The house still stands in very good condition. Clement Connick died in 1861 - his widow remained at Connick's Folly for 30 years. Connick's Folly is about half way between the village of Aquasco (to the south) and the village of Horsehead to the north. Both of these small villages are located within the Aquasco Election District.
Aquasco is the southeasternmost area of Prince George's County. At the time of the Civil War, it was totally agricultural, with only a few very small villages such as Aquasco. Because of its agricultural character, this area tended to have a larger than average ratio of Negro slaves to the total population. Here are the statistics for 1860: Free whites - 614; Free blacks - 186; Slaves - 1200; Total population - 2000; Slave holders - 95.
I hope that this helps. If you would like me to send you scans of maps from just before and after the Civil War (showing Connick properties) send your e-mail address to me directly at:

Good luck with your research!
