Palmer Highway was built on the right of way of the old Washington, Baltimore and Annapolis Electric Railway which probably accounts for the fact that the road was very straight in parts.
It was a popular site for impromptu drag races back when I attended high school in the 1960s.
These provided the inspiration for the "Ballad of George Palmer Hiway" which began:
It was George Palmer Hiway
On a Saturday Night
All them Clutches were Poppin'
Not a Cop was in Sight
