Thanks for the info. Some of it is new to me. Family stories say John R was burried somewhere in Beltsville. As far as we have been able to determine it may be Family land at the time. My grandmother used to tell us stories of the tombstone in the woods. Unfortunatly this info was never documented and she is now gone.
Based off the Family Bible we belive 1797 was the DOB for Maire.
St johns also has two tombstones from Henry John Wissman (family bible has it as John Henry) - One is with his wife Laura (family stone) and the other is a single grave. No one knows why. St Johns records were destroyed by fire and they don't know which plot he is buried in. I hope to make it to the Library soon. Thanks again

: Russ,
: Sorry this reponse is so delayed. As you
: may know, we are in the midst of relocating
: our Historical Society library, and this has
: made it impossible for me to get my
: responses to inquiries out in a timely
: manner. But we are all settled in the
: Greenbelt Library building now, and our
: Grand Opening will be at 1:00 p.m. on
: Saturday, 31 May. Perhaps you will be able
: to come, and see some of the sources of the
: information that I will outline below.
:
: The only announcements in the (1860s) local
: papers regarding the Wissman family are the
: following:
: (a)John H. Wissman was married , 6 June
: 1861 near Beltsville by Rev. J. Swope to
: Laura A. Hall ("Planters'
: Advocate" 12 June 1861).
:
: [I do not have the name of J. Swope among
: the list of Rectors of St. John's Episcopal
: Church in Beltsville (where at least some of
: the Wissman family were members), but I
: believe that there was an hiatus in 1860-61,
: and it is possible that Swope may have been
: temporarily in charge at that church during
: that time.]
:
: (b) Henry Wissman, carpenter working at
: Naval Academy, died by drowning at Windmill
: Point (Annapolis)13 July 1868. His body was
: returned to Beltsville where he had a wife
: and several children ("Baltimore
: Sun", 15 July 1868)
:
: [(a) and (b) are probably the same
: individual.]
:
: (c) Marie Adele Wissman, age 71, widow
: of John R. Wissman, died at Vansville
: ("Baltimore Sun", 10 August 1868.
: [Her age here does not fit the dates on her
: tombstone . . . )
:
: You probably have all of these bits of
: information, but you asked also about
: Pleasant Grove. This was the plantation of
: the Hall family, located north of what is
: now NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. In
: this immediate area was the Pleasant Grove
: Methodist church - what remains of its
: graveyard is located on Springfield Road,
: across the road and north of the Goddard
: Optical Center. There are no Wissman
: gravestones among those remaining.
:
: The Wissman family apparently belonged to
: St. John's Episcopal Church in Beltsville.
: Ten individual members of the family are
: buried in that church graveyard
: (intersection of Route #1 and Powder Mill
: Road in Beltsville), including J. Henry
: Wissman who drowned in July 1868, and Marie
: A. Wissman (1779-1868) noted above. There
: is no visible stone for John R. Wissman in
: St. John's graveyard, but that does not mean
: that he is not buried there, especially
: since his widow was buried there.
:
: Hope this helps!

: Thanks, no luck there. Does anyone know
: where I can find Obituaries for 1851 in the
: Beltsville, MD area. No luck in the
: Washington Post.
:
: Has anyone come accross any family graves
: near NASA, in Greenbelt. John Henry
: Wissman- John's son Married into the Hall
: Family (Laura Ann Hall) of Pleasant Grove,
: MD. I was wondering if maybe he was buried
: on family land.
:
: I haven't been able to pinpoint where
: Pleasant Grove was either. Some Articele
: had it near NASA. Any guidance is
: appreciated. THANKS

: You might check findagrave on the internet,
: or
: Cyndi's list on the internet.

: Hi, I was wondering if any has come accross
: the grave of John R Wissman in Beltsville.
: MD. He and his wife and son immigrated from
: Germany to Beltsville between 1833-1839.
: John Died in 1851 in Beltsville. I can't
: find his grave anywhere. Maire was burried
: at St John's Episcopal. The church records
: were destroyed by fire. He died prior to
: burials at the church. The Archdiosis
: archives had no info on the family.
:
: Any help in locating this grave or records
: would be appreciated. THANKS
