I have the unpublished papers that you want at the Historic Preservation library at MNCPPC, and will send copies to you IF YOU SEND ME YOUR MAILING ADDRESS! Please send the address to: susan.pearl@ppd.mncppc.org If your mill is indeed the mill shown on Dennis Griffith's 1795 map (and accessible now, I would assume, from Dr. Bowen Road), here is what I know about it so far: It is shown on the Griffith map on the east side of Swanson's Creek, 5 miles from its mouth. It is listed in the 1798 Federal Direct Tax as Rinaldo Johnson's mill, a 46' by 30' mill house and a 46' by 30' frame distillery on part of Buttington Mill Seat. Also listed is a 16-foot square tanner's house, all 6 miles from Lower Marlboro, and 2 miles from the Patuxent, in Prince Frederick Hundred. The 1878 Hopkins Atlas shows P.A. Bowen's gristmill (probably the same mill?) on Swanson's Creek, NW of Aquasco. The 1880 Manufacturing Schedule of the Federal Census lists the mill with $3000 investment, 2 employees, 2 run of stones, 100 bushels per diem maximum, doing 1/8 custom work. A 20' fall drove a 10 horsepower overshot wheel 4' broad at 15 r.p.m. Output was 100 bbl flour, 135 tons meal, and 8.5 tons feed ($2586). The mill was idle half the year. There is a gentleman, John McGrain, in Baltimore who is the expert on Maryland mills. I'm sure he would love to see yours. May I contact and invite him? Susan G.
