1. My great-great-grandparents, Johann and Christina Glaum emigrated from Germany in 1869. They originally settled in Indiana. Johann died and Christina remarried. She moved to Maryland with her new husband, George Ruland and two of her children, John and Elizabeth Glaum. On the 1880 census for Vansville, MD, you will see George and Christina Ruland. Also listed are John and Elizabeth, with the surname misspelled as “Gloom.” George Ruland works for the Treasury Department in Washington DC. John is a farmer. 2. We have also found a listing for George Ruland in the “Prince George’s, Maryland Directory for 1878.” He is listed as being a farmer in Seabrook. 3. We know that John Glaum sold the farm in 1900 to H.B. Rossiter. Both parties to the sale were residing in Pasadena, CA at the time of the sale. We did obtain a copy of the Indenture from the Maryland State Archives. 4. According to the 1900 sale record, the farm was situated 1.5 miles west of Seabrooke Station. The land was originally surveyed in 1874 by George W. Jackson. The land is part of a tract…“called Glovers Hall, including the mansion house and other buildings, and of portions of three other tracts or parcels of land called “Strike”, “Clover Farm” and “Elizabeth” containing in all 99.375 acres.” The land was bounded by the lands of Thomas Harvey, Captain Halch, George W. Bennix and others. 5. We have a letter written in 1898 by John Glaum in which he says he has been living on this farm for 22 years, or approximately 1876. He lists his return address as “Clovers Hall Farm.” 6. The researchers at the Archives were unable to find any records showing the original purchase of the land by either George Ruland or John Glaum. We know that both names are often misspelled. The Archives sent a list of other possible names, including Roland, Rollins and Rolands. They did not, however, have time to pursue these leads for us. It seems that some version of either name should appear on both the 1878 and 1894 maps. 7. John Glaum and his family moved to California. Christina Glaum Ruland died in 1881. Elizabeth Glaum died of tuberculosis in 1896. They are both buried in the cemetery of St. George’s Episcopal Chapel in Glen Dale. We have no information on when George Ruland died or where he may be buried. We hope this information is helpful. We will certainly try to call you at the library on Saturday. Thanks again for your assistance with our research. Carl Glaum --Previous Message--
First of all, thank you so much for your prompt and very welcome reply. Here is what we know:
: The Historical Society library is normally
: open only on Saturday afternoons, but I
: might be able to meet you there for a short
: time on Monday the 10th. You would need to
: give me more information on Clovers Hall - I
: have plenty of information on Seabrook, but
: have not run across that farm name in my
: research on the area. What was the family
: name of the owners of that farm? (I do not
: find the name Glaum on either of our 1878 or
: 1894 maps.)
:
: Be sure to respond to my response, and if at
: all possible, call me at the library on
: Saturday, 4/8 between noon and 4 p.m. so
: that we can decide whether I should try to
: meet you at the library. The phone there is
: 301-464-0590. With more information, I can
: tell you whether we can help you with the
: information you are looking for.

: My family owned land in Prince George's
: County from about 1878 until 1900. They
: lived in Seabrook on land described as
: Clovers Hall farm. We are going to be in
: the area this coming Monday, April 10.
: Would it be possible to make an appointment
: to review the Society's collection? We would
: certainly appreciate the opportunity to
: continue our research into my Glaum family's
: Maryland connection. Thank you for your
: help.
