From what I have been advised about them they seem to exist for a fairly short period of time prior to and briefly concurrent to the Knights Templar. They were warriors who were for hire to fight on the behalf of who ever hired them providing they were willing to "carry a hatchet" for your particular cause. They also liked to take it upon themselves to come and fight on your behalf for free whenever they really, really to a liking to your campaign. The problem with them is that they were extremely rowdy, violent and over zealous. Their demeanor was not at all similar to Knights Templar. They were more like incorrigible savages. When they came to town people couldn’t wait for them to leave but no one dared ask them to leave or had the guts to ask them to behave. Kinda like a hoodlum gang trying to do good but not quite getting what is and isn't good. Ward-locks? Where are you getting this from? Never heard of this. Where did you hear this? Name the source and we may be able to explain.
