I REMEMBER by Gene Minix I remember the fields of corn And of cotton so white. With the neighbor's daughter, Chasing fireflies into the August night. Following Daddy and the plow. The cool earth between my toes. That ole mule pulling the plow Down those long straight rows. Going to town on a Saturday morning. Always a special treat. A Gene Autry or Roy Rogers movie And a bag of popcorn to eat. Those long bus rides were fun Down to Ole Madras School. Where we learned our A, B, C's And taught the Golden Rule. I remember Mama calling us to supper. A meal cooked with love so fine. Yes, growing up on the farm Was such a very wonderful time. To town was always special. Truly for us kids a special treat. A stop by Lee-King's Drug Store To enjoy an ice cream sweet. We didn't have a lot of money, true. But, we were rich as could be. Family and friends who loved. Such sweet memories to me. To church on Sunday Was always special to me. To hear the preacher's sermon And friends to see. I often recall those days Of many years ago. A time that is special to me. A time I loved so. Some will say those times were hard Back in that day. But, you know, they really were good And sweet memories locked in my heart will stay. © Copyright 2023, by Gene Minix. All rights reserved. |
