A LITTLE BIT SLOWER by Gene Minix Jenny is a lot different. She is not the same. She can no longer jump But she's not the blame. The fence isn't higher And though it comes to my shoulder We used to jump it on the run But now Jenny is older. Her muscles aren't the same As they used to be. But I'm sure she'd try the jump If the command came from me. She's been a loyal friend For a long, long time. And no better horse Could this cowboy find. Was it not just yesterday Through the meadow we'd ride. And when I nudged, Jenny, She'd jump that fence in stride. But we're both getting older And we both know it well. And it's now a pleasant walk Down the meadow trail. The breeze still blows free At the closing of the day. The calves in the meadow They still run and play. The water ripples in the creek. A coyote howls over the way. The setting sun paints a picture More beautiful than words can say. And Jenny and her rider are content. The blessings of life abound. And down on the meadow trail Two old friends can be found. We may not gallop with the wind And we don't jump the fence anymore. But we do still enjoy the ride. We just ride a little bit slower. © Copyright 2013, by Gene Minix. All rights reserved. |
