IT WAS A WONDERFUL WORLD by Gene Minix Sweet tasting candy cigarettes. In my shirt pocket a bubble gum cigar. Riding my bike down a country road Pretending it was a big Cadillac car. Shooting marbles in the sand. Lincoln Logs and pick-up sticks. "Walking the dog" with my yo-yo. And building a house with American bricks. Roy Rogers and Gene Autry. Watching television was grand. Baseball and football cards. Playing without a shirt got a dark tan. Hide and seek until the night closed in. Rolling down grassy hills. Life was sure good back then. Everyday was filled with thrills. Ah, the sound the cardboard made In our bike spokes. We chased the calf out in the pasture. And what about those "knock knock" jokes. Picking up stray dogs And bringing them back home. Holding hands with the neighbor's girl And sharing a kiss when we were alone. Snows closed the school doors And what fun we had. Building snowmen and throwing snowballs Ah, don't you know we were glad. With love Mama and Daddy tucked us in. Goodnight's with love so true. It was a wonderful world back then. A wonderful time we knew. © Copyright 2023, by Gene Minix. All rights reserved. |
