In the book of Exodus God usually referred to the Israelites as his people whom he will save (Exodus 3:7 - 8, 10, 5:1, etc.). After the people grievously sinned by making a golden calf to worship, however, the Lord calls them Moses' people who he (Moses) brought out of Egypt! "And the Lord said unto Moses, Go, get thee down; for THY PEOPLE, which THOU broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves . . . " (Exodus 32:7 - 8, see also 33:1). Interestingly, Moses himself never references the Israelites as his people (see Exodus 5:22 - 23, 17:4, 19:23, etc.). |
