Mike,
I understand that you want it to look as good as possible, but having had dogs back washing machines and mylar balloons, I can tell you that I'm convinced that no matter how poor your artistic skills are that they're satisfactory for this endeavor ;-)
If you need a little help, an old art trick is to take a photo of a pointing dog silhouette that you'd like to copy. Draw a grid of evenly placed lines (both horizontal and vertical) on your photo. Then take your plywood and draw a series of the same number of evenly placed horizontal and vertical lines. Then draw the silhouette on your plywood.
The final quality of your silhouette will vary with your artistic skills but the grid will help keep the overall scale correct.
