In order for .22 bird shot to be effective at all, it must be discharged from a smooth bore 22 firearm. If you shoot it from a 22 with rifling, the pattern is blown and its ability to kill is greatly reduced. If you don't have a smooth bore 22, that means a firearm acquisition in order to use the 22 bird shot ammo.
In addition 22 bird shot out of a smooth bore must be used at very close range in order to be effective. If your poking the smoothbore out a cracked window to shoot a squirrel on a very close bird feeder, great! If the shot is 50 feet or more, you'll be disappointed.
Your likely solution is a .410 or 20 ga. I include the 20 ga because ammo is much cheaper.
I mean no insult to anyone. These are my opinions from my experiences with these matters.
