Hi guys! I’ve run into a weird issue in my house and honestly don’t know where to start. There’s this unpleasant smell coming from a floor drain in my basement, especially after a few days when it’s not used. At first, I thought it was just some dirt buildup or maybe something stuck in the pipes, but even after cleaning, the smell keeps coming back.
I started reading a bit and found out that drains actually rely on some kind of water barrier to block sewer gases, which I had no idea about before. Now I’m wondering — what happens if that water disappears? Does it evaporate over time? And if yes, is there some system that’s supposed to prevent that automatically?
I’m not very experienced with plumbing, so I’m trying to understand whether this is something simple I can fix myself or if I should call a professional. Has anyone dealt with something similar? I’d really appreciate any advice, especially if you can explain it in simple terms
