Members of several of the European Borgward Clubs have planned a very nice trip to cross the US coast to coast in their Borgwards in the fall of 2017.
They reached out about joining us at the conclusion of their drive in California for our fall meet. I had just had word before our meet in Carmel last October. There was an enthusiastic response from our group and there was discussion of some of us driving out to meet them in western Arizona and then driving back as a group to Santa Barbara for the meet.
The meet is scheduled for Oct 12-15, 2017 in Santa Barbara and all are welcome.
Some of you in other parts of the country who are unable to attend may wish to link up as they pass through your area.
I am including the forwarded itinerary below. Also a nice chart with destinations, dates and distances is available on www.borgward.org.uk under the Route 66 tab.
Forwarded message from Cris Guns:
I wish you, your family and the USA Borgward Club members a very happy New Year, a good health and lots of fortune.
It has taken a long time, but we have now determined the starting date of our Borgward tour, and this is now our planning:
We will fly to New York latest on Sunday 17/09/2017 and get our cars customs cleared on Monday 18/09/2017. (Though some may want to fly a couple of days earlier to visit NY)
The actual tour will start on Tuesday 19/09/2017, driving through the Catskills to Whitney Point (377km). On Wednesday 20/09/2017, we drive via the Fingerlakes and the NY Canals to the Niagara Falls (355 km). On Thursday 21/09, we will drive by Lake Erie to Cleveland (362km), and on Friday 22/09/2017, we'll drive the 557 km (highway) to Chicago where we will stay 2 nights. On Sunday 24/09/2017, we take the Route 66 to Springfield. (347km). Next day we drive to Rolla (351km), and on Tuesday 26/09/2017 we continue to Joplin (330 km). On Wednesday 27/09/2017 we drive to Oklahoma City (420km), where we will have another resting day. We drive to Amarillo (459km) on Friday 29/09/2017, and one day later on 30/09/2017 to Santa Rosa in New Mexico (428km). On Sunday 01/10/2017 we go on to Grants (383km) and on Monday we continue to Holbrook (352km). On Tuesday 03/10/2017 we visit the Meteor Crater and continue to Phoenix. There we'll have another resting day. On Thursday 05/10/2017 we head to Seligman on the Route 66 (440km). On Friday 06/10/2017 we go back Northeast towards Kayenta and Monument Valley. (367 km). On Saturday 07/10/2017, we visit the Antelope Canyons and Lake Powell on our way to Page (300km), on Sunday 08/10/2017, we go via Zion to Las Vegas, where we will stay 2 nights. On Tuesday 10/10/2017 we drive from Las Vegas via the Grand Canyon Skywalk to Kingman (319km), where we will join the Route 66 again. On Wednesday 11/10/2017 we continue to Barstow in California (347km). Maybe we can meet up with the members of the US Borgward Drivers Club over there, and then drive all together on Thursday 12/10/2017 to the Borgward meeting in Santa Barbara? On Monday 16/10/2017 we will then drive to Long Beach in LA (200km) to drop of our cars to ship them back to Europe. We then plan to fly back to Europe as from Tuesday 17/10/2017. (Some people may want to stay some extra days to visit LA)
So far, the owners of 9 (European) Borgwards have already expressed their interest to participate to the tour with about 20 people, but the actual trip is still a long time from now, so the number may still change. We have however decided to limit the number of European cars to maximum 20. Otherwize, the group will become to big to manage 😅.
We plan to make a presentation of our trip during the World Meeting in Bremen, and at the Belgian meeting in May, and the Dutch Club proposed last week to publish an article in their club magazine.
We will register participants till end of September 2016.
At that moment, we will be able to confirm the exact numbers and names of the people who will join us.
Hoping to hear from you soon, kind regards, Cris.
End forwarded message
I will post more information and updates here as I receive them. In the meantime consider if you might be able to come to Santa Barbara. Late this summer I am going to try to get an idea how many of us from this side of the Atlantic will attend, to combine with the number of our fellow enthusiasts from Europe to get an appropriate block of rooms in Santa Barbara.
Feel free to contact me with ideas or questions.
