Croatia: Cardinal Kuharic is mourned
Cardinal Franjo Kuharic, the former Archbishop of Zagreb, died last Monday
in the early hours of the morning.
In Cardinal Kuharic, the world has said goodbye to a priest who - even in times of the most extreme persecution by his country's former communist regime - always remained faithful to his flock, and always strove to accompany the Catholic faithful, without compromise, towards their destined goal.
During the Balkan wars of 1991-1995, Cardinal Kuharic was always on the side of the innocent victims. In everything, his central concern was for the welfare of a persecuted Christianity which still strove for unity. He issued repeated and urgent appeals to the warring parties in the recent conflicts to put an end to their hostilities. In 1989, during the time of the former Yugoslavia, he welcomed the founder of Aid to the Church in Need, Father Werenfried van Straaten - a lifetime friend - and asked his help for the oppressed Church in his country.
Aid to the Church in Need has never abandoned the once persecuted Christians in Croatia, nor even today those who still suffer all too often. Instead it has always supported them and, thanks to the generosity of all its benefactors, will also continue to do so in the future.
