Re: pony express research and other observations
There is a neat Museum devoted to the Pony Express in St. Joe Missouri. Also there are several stations along the route in KS and NE that are still there. Although it didn't last long it still has many landmarks. Overland Park KS was one of the places the Pony express had warehouse if you will for supplies and supposedly one of the places the James Butler Hickok worked at while with the Express. It was also a leaping off point for wagon trains going west. I had a similar reading experience not long ago when reading about Buffalo Bill's show when it came to Topeka, KS in the 1880's. At the time Hickok either was visiting or actually in the show and got into a fist fight in down to Topeka and was fined fifty cents. Sometimes it's easy to forget that it has a basis in fact.
