Good article on a recent talk by Takhli vet Leo Thorsness - a Medal of Honor recipient for a Wild Weasel mission he flew in April 1967. Thorsness and his EWO took out two SAM sites, destroyed a MIG and drove off another flight of MIGS threatening the rescue helicopters on the scene of his downed wingman. All that over NVN and on low fuel. A few days later Thorness was captured following shoot down of his Thud over NVN and he spent the next six years near Hanoi as a POW.
“I realized that it was as random as a flip of a coin that I was born in America,” Thorsness said. “Even though I wasn’t free at the time (in POW camp) and my guards were, I wouldn’t have traded places with them for anything."
Hand salute to Col. Leo Thorsness - now 79 and still speaking strongly and proudly.
