From April '68 TO appril '69 I was assigned to The MARS station AI8AF at Takhli. The MARS site Was a two mission building.... .. One side was The portal to call home known as MARS and the Other side was tactical comm. Both sides used The Collins KWM-2A HF Tranciever. We had a Rhombic antenna and beam to reach out to stateside For phone patches to so many Amateur stations that Were MARS members. Barry Goldwater, K7UGA Phoenix Was very reliable for this link. My call at the time was K7YSP. I now hold Amateur call sign AI8AF as a salute to all the volunteer operators stationed at Takhli who assisted around the clock 24/7 to make connections to families back home. 73 to those that went on to obtain Amateur Radio Callsigns and became the other end of our efforts For the remaining period of the Vietnam era!!!! |
