I am truly sorry for your loss. I also was stationed at Takhli in 1966. Here is my suggestions:
1) Obtain a full set of Paul's military records from the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis, MO
2. Go through his records with a fine tooth comb, and I mean a fine toothed comb. Look for and document all names, dates and places connected with his tour at Takhli and/or from the base in which he was sent TDY to Takhli. There may be clues hidden all over these records. Look very carefully at all of his Performance Reports, who wrote them and what they say. And when you think you have found everything possible, do it all over again. Do this several times. Each time you go through them you will come up something else you might be able to use.
3. Research all the names you have documented on the internet and make serious efforts to contact all the personnel connected with his tour at Takhli. If you connect with someone, see if you can get them to write a "Buddy Letter" for you.
4. Obtain Paul's Medical and Pay Records and go through them as well. Someone here may be able to advise on how to obtain them. A single medical record created at a Takhli medical facility will carry a lot of weight in getting a claim approved. And it does not matter what he went into the Med Facility for either. Again, all I think you need to do is prove that he was there.
5. All personnel in any WAR ZONE are exempt from US Federal Income Taxes while there, no matter for how short of a period. Even just flying over a war zone will get them an exemption for that day and will be duly recorded by the IRS and on base finance records. So searching through old tax records may also provide some convincing evidence that you can use.
4. Then, as Al suggested, get hooked up with a VSO (Veteran's Service Officer). They are there to help you... and they know how the system is wired. They are on your side.
IMO: I do not think it is incumbent that you prove Paul died as a result of his military service. You just need to prove that he was there at Takhli. This is where the VSO can help you.
It's a daunting but necessary task to do all this but it may help you obtain a successful claim.
I wish you the best of luck.
Rich
