Re: Almost inter urban route
Went to Almond MI a few times in the last month to drive and walk the side streets to find trades it the D.U.R. electric interurban railroad that once ran thru almont and up to imlay city. Before I found an actual accurate map of the exact route it took thru town I only suspected it came up cherry rd. From the gated off corridor at the south end of cherry street that is pretty grown over but u can still see where it came thru the woods . I was lost after that as too exactly how it went thru almost north up to inlay city except for the opening in the trees,u can see from the McDonalds parking lot across the main rd. That is an obvious, row. For an old railroad. Then I found a map of the route at almost library and began walking up and down cherry st. South of the library and I could see the curve in a person back yard where the tracks curved over to the north east and crossed mill.st. and went give to branch st. Next to where the old city hall used to be. The curved tree line in the empty grass lot beside mill sand branch street is a dead giveaway that tracks once went thru there on a curved angle. From there as I looked closely in the yard of the house across the street from st. Clair st. I could see a scar on the lawn where the road bed once was and it looked like they tried to hide the corridor dumbest by planting shrubs across it in the back yard but I could still see the obvious opening in the trees higher up. Then I drove over to the next street north of there and could see where the tracks once went thru between the 2 houses and it was obvious that the current powerlines follow the old row from cherry st. All the way thru almost north down the trail between the tall trees where it crossed the main rd. Right before the present day mcdonalds. If I had permission from the owners I wish they would let me walk the whole row thru their back yards if I could get all the way thru it. Interesting how this old inter urban route opened right up in front of my eyes once I saw the map but I did not notice it before hand in most areas in midtown almont. Kinda neat how time has kinda tried to erase this old rail line but if u know, where to look u can still see traces of this mostly forgotten old inter urban of yesterday.
