It is with great sadness that I share with you the news of Don Meintsí passing. He died in his sleep nearly a week ago in Arizona, where he and his wife spent their winters. His family is now back in Kalamazoo, where in time arrangements will be made for services in his memory. I am glad to say that Don lived long enough to receive the Historical Society of Michiganís Lifetime Achievement Award, an honor for which he was greatly moved.
With Donís demise, our cause has been deprived of one of its greatest proponents. Michigan railroad history has lost a giant; let us all strive to use Don as a role model by each doing what we can to tell the story of that part of our stateís transportation system based on the turning of flanged wheels.
