Re: Port Huron Sub Derailments
I''m pretty sure the Clifford and Silverwood wreck was the same, happening just east of Clifford and west of Clifford. I have a copy of Rails around the Thumb written by TJ Gaffney...the wreck is covered with good photo's of the aftermath on pages 43 and 44. Details are as follows...The wreck happened in 1975, but no specific date written. The train had three 9 year old GP-30's which were all consumed in fire. (photo of them are in the book)Some of the autoracks carried brand new Lincoln Continentals. One tank car carried some sort of poisonous gas which exploded, causing the evacuation. The flames burned for over 48 hours. Vandals had cut a lock off the west switch, causing the eastbound train to veer off the main and onto the siding which contained some tank cars. The lock was later found in a nearby field. No mention of any injuries are printed.
