Yes, there symbols were a little more descriptive than what Chessie used since they gave you an origin and termination. Believe ELLA was Elkhart-Lansing; GREL was Grand Rapids-Elkhart; and DWEL was Detroit/Windsor-Elkhart. When I worked for BNSF, they have 6-letter symbols, like GALCHC was Galesburg-Chicago and DMOWQM was Des Moines-W. Quincy, Missouri. Alphabet soup!! I was also going to mention that the Plymouth Turnaround (PLTA) was very short lived because the crew could never make the round trip in 12 hours! When it sometimes took 2 to 4 hours to get out of Walbridge and up to 5 or 6 hours consumed before even getting by Erie you were already on short time. The goal was always to get a departure in one hour after on-duty time at the origin.
