I found this History of Fife Lake page that describes the formation of Fyfe Lake (South Town) and (North) Fife Lake in an 1881 Grand Traverse Herald article. If I read it correctly, it seems that the railroad had a lot to do with the creation of the South Town but constructed a station in North Fife Lake which didn't last too long. A new station was constructed in South Town. Being written in 1881, it doesn't address when the station was moved back to Fife Lake proper.
