The current staff will work until the end of August transferring certain assets to Tilden mine and work on securing the area.
At the end of the month 266 hourly and 45 salary employees will be laid off.
There are no future plans for the mine as of yet. The mine will be maintained to stay compliant with all maintenance codes.

Cliffs Natural Resources has announced further layoffs resulting from the planned closure of the Empire Mine.
A total of 266 employees will be displaced on August 28th.
A majority of these employees were hired by the company between 2007-2011. It lists an array of positions being laid off: general laborer, mechanics, electricians, truck drivers, ect.
TV6 has reached out to Cliffs Natural Resources and United Steel Workers Local 4950 for comment and has left messages.
