Re: Soo bound trains
The "short line" mentioned in Don's Post is the Huron Central, a subsidary railroad owned by parent Genesee Wyoming Co. This line is the former 173 mile branch of the Canadian Pacific RR that runs from Sudbury Ont. to the Soo. The line carries a lot of various products, including paper, forest, steel, and scrap. Several years ago, this line was in imminent danger of total abandonment, but a lot of effort by local political figures, as well as shippers convinced the Canadian Government to lend a large sum of money for rehabilitation of the entire line. I just read somewhere that the line has since been rebuilt, and traffic seems to be doing a little better. There are a few customers along the line, but for the most part, the ones in the Soo area generate a majority of the business.
