When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading!
John "Jack" Norman Ozanich - Johnny-O
Maybe some of you know Jack, or maybe have heard of him. He was a Retired GTW Locomotive Engineer, here in Battle Creek.
He was into Trains, big time. He had a railroad running around the property he had northeast of Battle Creek, and a superb Model Railroad in his basement.
I never saw either of them, but over the years I've heard from people that had. He was a "BY THE RULES" kind of modeler and operator.
The last time I saw him was a number of years ago at a Lowes Store, or Menards Store, he said I should come visit him. He said if the gate was open, he was home, if the gate was closed and locked, he wasn't.
His obit says he lived in Paw Paw, but that was quite a while ago. He lived northeast of Battle Creek, not too far from the GTW Flint Subdivision. I can remember seeing him out walking along the tracks several times before I retired.
He had pneumonia and lung cancer, never smoked a cigarette in his life. A couple of his close friends kept me posted about his condition. He ended up in the hospital, only about 10 days or a couple weeks ago. A group of his friends got together one day and visited him there, from the parking lot. They couldn't get in to see him, but they made a big sign for him with their names on it.
Just three days ago they said he had some kind of port installed in one lung, and they were going to do the other one the next day. The Mayo Clinic had some kind of experimental cancer drug they suggested.
The next day the second port wouldn't work properly, and he just told everybody that was it. There was nothing that could cure him, and he was in so much pain. He was ready to go to a hospice and wait for the end. He never left the hospital, he died Friday about 1:00 PM.
