A grip is basically a duffle bag with a handle and opens with a zipper at the top, sometimes including a side pocket. I never really associated it with just a railroad term. However, it is indeed where a crew member puts his/her "stuff" including timetable, rule book, etc. When I started in 1970, the rule book was about 1/2 inch thick and we got along just fine! Now, they are much bulkier to carry around, at least the last one I had was from BNSF.
